Fourth edition of ‘t Zandcafe

‘t Zandcafé is a neighbourhood gathering with the goal to connect people to the neighbourhood through stories and information.

In this fourth edition of ‘t Zandcafé, held on Saturday 29 August, we organised a neighbourhood cinema at OMNII, with short videos about ‘t Zand. With a unique collection of both professional and amateur footage, we dove into the (social) history of ‘t Zand. This footage, made by residents and other people involved with the neighbourhood, tells the story of the events and places that formed our neighbourhood. Makers, residents and other people involved told us more about the videos. It was an evening filled with recognition and discovery for everyone who lives, works or regularly visits ‘t Zand.

What?

Although the plan was to organise an outdoor cinema, the weather did not allow us to sit in the garden of OMNII. Luckily, there was enough space inside to put down our inflatable screen, so the neighbourhood cinema could still continue!

The programme was built around 4 Dutch V words (Past, Resistance, Improvement and Celebration), which were also used during the exhibition last year. For Past, we looked at a short video, and we looked ahead to the next Zandcafé: ‘The Battle for ‘t Zand – 1944’. Resistance was about the squatting in the Melkfabriek with two special videos which have been made available by Kees van de Boogaard, especially for this evening, and the battle for community centre De Hoop. Annemarie Bon told us about the Street Play Day and how this came to be. For Improvement, we looked at the redesign of the Maijweg, the shadow and light project at the Boschveldboulevard, and the building of Sint Luciaplein. Former director Jan van der Putten told us how the Verkade cookie factory was transformed into the cultural centre it is today and what was necessary to achieve this with unique footage from his private collection. Lastly, for Celebration we looked at and listened to a video from Josefien Fleuren, ‘Op Stand op ‘t Zand’, and we ended with compilation of the Zandlopers neighbourhood party and the Burendagen.

This evening came about because of the many stories and footage from residents, among which the 844 slides that were donated by Kees van de Wiel.

There was a nice turnout and everyone was very enthusiastic. During the break and after the event people talked about the footage and the stories.
